October Arrives-With Haunting Halloween Names Agore

October has arrived, and Second Life is wasting no time getting into the spirit of the season. A fresh collection of limited-time last names has been released, and this batch is unapologetically Halloween—with choices ranging from pleasantly autumnal to wonderfully ridiculous to genuinely undead.

For those who prefer their October with crisp leaves, candlelight and perhaps a suspicious amount of cinnamon, Moonglow and Pumpkinspice offer appropriately seasonal choices. Pumpkinspice, in particular, feels inevitable. Somewhere in Second Life, an avatar is already standing in a coffee shop wearing an oversized sweater and contemplating becoming Arabella Pumpkinspice. I can feel it. It won’t be me.

Things become considerably darker with Sanguine, Lich, Geist, Haunting, and Lenore. Sanguine carries just the right amount of elegant vampiric menace, while Lich is ideal for anyone whose avatar has been technically dead for several centuries but still manages to attend weekend sales. Geist—German for spirit or ghost—has a wonderfully old-world supernatural quality, while Lenore brings a decidedly Gothic literary air to the collection.

Then we have Spoopy, because apparently even the undead are not immune to internet culture. It is difficult to imagine introducing oneself solemnly as Lord Something Spoopy, which is precisely why someone absolutely should.

Rounding out the list are Mash and Skelly, both of which lean toward the playful side of Halloween. Mash practically demands a first name of Monster, while Skelly seems destined for the innumerable skeletons who suddenly find employment every October standing on porches, sitting in rocking chairs and driving hearses around Bellisseria. I can already see a haunted Scottish band called Skellyvore forming on the horizon.

The new names are available for a limited time through Second Life’s name-change system. As seasonal releases go, this one offers a rather strange spectrum—from autumn cottagecore to Edgar Allan Poe to full-blown graveyard nonsense.

And really, isn’t that exactly what October in Second Life should be? Let the haunting begin.
