Relay for Life 2026: Getting Ready to Relay

As I write this, the anticipation and excitement surrounding the biggest single fundraising effort in Second Life are palpable. The 2026 Relay for Life of Second Life is now less than 48 hours away, and here are the things you need to know to make it a great experience!

I’ve written a lot about what Relay is already, so if you’d like to learn more, you’ll find some helpful links at the end of this article. For now, here’s the short and simple version:

  • 204 individual teams (at last count) are participating in the 2026 Relay for Life of Second Life. Together, they represent thousands of people working behind the scenes to make this event possible.
  • Most of those teams have built custom campsites along the Relay Track, which winds through 40 individual regions. Experiencing the track is a huge part of Relay because every campsite tells a story. If you have the chance, visit before the event begins and take a leisurely walk around the track to see it all.
  • Teams have been fundraising officially since February. As of last night, L$92,110,507 has been raised, which equates to approximately US$368,332. That’s an incredible achievement!
  • The theme for this year’s Relay is Wild for a Cure, and you’ll see it reflected throughout the event in the décor, themed campsites, and overall atmosphere. Bringing a team’s vision to life while incorporating the annual theme is one of the most enjoyable challenges of Relay.
  • Donations are made in-world through the many kiosks located along the track and within campsites. These kiosks are officially approved by both the American Cancer Society and Linden Lab. When you make a donation, it passes securely through the kiosk owner’s account directly to Linden Lab before reaching the American Cancer Society. You can donate with confidence, knowing your contribution is supporting the cause.
  • On Relay Day, many participants will be walking the track, while others will be standing alongside it to cheer them on. Whether you’re walking or cheering, your presence makes a difference.
  • Lining the track are luminaria bags, similar to those you may have seen at real-life Relay events. These serve as a visible way to honor loved ones currently battling cancer, support caregivers, or remember those who have lost their fight with the disease. To purchase and dedicate one, simply pay any white luminaria bag along the track and follow the instructions provided. It’s quick, easy, and meaningful.
  • Relay begins with an Opening Ceremony and continues for 24 hours before concluding with the Closing Ceremony. Throughout that entire period, people will be on the track. Teams work hard to ensure they have at least one member walking at all times. Even if you aren’t part of a team, you’re welcome to Relay right alongside everyone else.
  • At 9PM SLT, the Luminaria Ceremony takes place in the audio stream and along the track. The names and dedications to loved ones are read over there air. During that time, we pause where we are or walk in silence as this moving and meaningful ceremony takes place.
  • There are also themed hours throughout the event. These are displayed at the border crossing signs each hour, but if you pick up a schedule from one of the border crossing kiosks, you can plan ahead and prepare any costume or clothing changes for the themed hours you want to participate in.

The key things to remember about Relay are respect, remembrance, teamwork, support, and FUN! Make new friends, strike up conversations, and enjoy the journey.

One important thing to remember is that Relay consists of many moving parts, all working together at the same time. When you have hundreds of avatars moving from one region to the next across dozens of regions, lag becomes inevitable. Expect it. Accept it. Consider it just another part of the fight against cancer and keep pushing forward.

Here are a few tips to help you cope with lag and avoid contributing to it:

  • Wear low-impact clothing and hair, and keep your avatar complexity as low as possible. For last year’s Relay, I was limited to track shorts, top and sneakers, with a low impact hair (see above). This helped a lot.
  • Remove every HUD you can comfortably live without. Most HUDs contain scripts that contribute to lag. AOs, texture changers, and other scripted attachments all add up. It’s okay if we all walk a little dorky for a day!
  • Be patient. Lag is part of the challenge.
  • At some point, you will probably crash. Accept it, log back in, and keep going!
  • Pick up a free pedometer and Walk & Talk device (or whatever we’re calling it these days) from the border crossing kiosks. They can automate much of the walking process, allowing you to focus on steering and socializing.
  • Be courteous and kind. Some people walk, some run. Relay your way!
  • Leave vehicles, horses, and other conveyances at home. They make navigation more difficult for others and can increase lag.
  • Lower your viewer settings and reduce your draw distance, especially if you’re using an older computer.
  • If possible, use a wired internet connection, which is often more stable than wireless.

Most importantly…

HAVE FUN!

I look forward to seeing you on the Relay track—or perhaps in one of our campsite pubs along the way!
