In the sprawling, ever-growing continent of Bellisseria within Second Life, a unique lifestyle awaits those drawn to the gentle lapping of virtual waves and the freedom of open water: Linden Houseboats…and though they have been around a few years now, these houseboats offer Second Life Premium members a scenic, customizable, and community-oriented alternative to traditional land-based homes and the hard-to-get stilt homes. Whether you’re a sailor, sun-seeker, or someone who simply loves the idea of seeing water outside your window, Linden Houseboats represent one of the most immersive and beloved forms of living in the metaverse.
Linden Houseboats are part of the broader Bellisseria initiative launched in 2019 to offer residents more detailed and livable environments. The vision was simple: to provide homes that didn’t just offer land, but lifestyle. Rather than isolated parcels, the new homes were designed around walkable (and sail-able) communities, complete with parks, roads, clubs, waterways, and themed landscaping. The houseboats were an early hit, appealing to users who wanted a more nautical setting for their Second Life adventures.
I remember trying for weeks before I finally landed my first houseboat in Quahog Cove, with neighbors on both sides and plenty of water out front. During those early houseboat days, there was almost a sense of a big party going on amongst the residents, and finding unique ways to decorate and accessorize the smallish houseboats was a challenge everyone was up to it seemed.

Unlike static homes on suburban streets, houseboat residents find themselves anchored to wooden piers, boardwalks, or floating docks with open views of the water. Some homes are set in quiet lagoons; others have access to navigable channels that allow for boating, jet skiing, and leisurely exploration. This accessibility to Linden-protected waters has made houseboat life especially attractive to virtual sailors and lovers of outdoor water sports. While the parcels are not overly big, each comes with room for mooring a handful of boats and a quick tour of the waters reveals seaworthy vessels of every imaginable type and size.
The Layout and the Look
Linden Houseboats are assigned on 1024m² parcels, and recent improvements now give residents a very usable 468 land impact to use for decor, landscaping, or additional furnishings. There are multiple styles of houseboats to choose from — including the original four, Windlass, Wallower, Barnacle, and Evening Star — joined by more recent and improved editions called Dock Holiday, Knot Shore, Shore Thing and the truly large Jolly Roger, each offering a different layout and design aesthetic. The homes can be rezzed and swapped at any time via the house controller, which also allows for quick and easy personalization of exterior textures, wall colors, and access controls.
While the houseboats themselves are fixed in place and do not float or move, the illusion of life on the water is strong. Residents often enhance the realism with animated waves, seagull sounds, custom piers, paddleboards, and dockside gardens. Interior customization ranges from cozy beach cottages to boho boathouses and ultra-modern lofts. Many residents add rooftop decks or waterside hot tubs, transforming their parcels into floating havens of creativity.
My current one is somewhat isolated from the others on our sim, and sits sideways to the water rather than longways. This gave me a wide, expansive water area where I decided to build my own private beach, complete with palm trees, lounge chairs, a picnic table and a grill for cooking out. Since I only have a small boat, I didn’t need much water parking and having a beach for the front yard allows me to spread out, relax and enjoy the western sunsets over the ocean.

For the boat itself, I chose one of the newer designs, the Dock Holiday, which lends itself well to the sideways placement, having a nice deck on the left side, lots of windows, two rooms downstairs and nicely sized bedroom upstairs. It’s really an improvement over the earlier designs, though the originals have a huge fan base judging from all the ones still being used today. For decor, I chose mostly Nutmeg and Apple Fall, which closely reflects my preferred casual but comfortable style. My favorite photos and some artwork sourced from around the SL world help complete the interior theme I wanted.

A Vibrant Community
What makes Linden Houseboat living especially compelling isn’t just the water views — it’s the community. Bellisseria has become a hub for events, group activities, and social discovery, and the houseboat areas are no exception. On any given day, you might find live music concerts on floating stages, group sailing regattas, or neighborhood BBQs on community docks. Active groups like Bellisseria Citizens hold regular meetups, fostering a sense of camaraderie rarely found in traditional land rental communities.
Some houseboat neighborhoods also connect to nearby scenic railways and bike paths, adding a sense of interconnectivity between water and land. Residents frequently decorate their docks and front porches to reflect holidays, seasonal changes, or personal flair, giving each neighborhood a dynamic, ever-evolving look.
The Freedom of Water Living
Beyond aesthetics, Linden Houseboats appeal to those who enjoy a feeling of openness and calm. Unlike inland homes that may be surrounded by close neighbors or fences, houseboat parcels are typically bordered by navigable water, offering unblocked views and fewer privacy concerns. The result is a more tranquil, almost meditative environment — ideal for relaxing, writing, creating, or simply enjoying a virtual sunrise with a cup of coffee.

Many Second Life photographers and bloggers also favor houseboats for their dramatic lighting potential and photogenic settings. The interplay between light, water, and architecture offers a constantly changing palette for virtual creatives.
Getting a Linden Houseboat
Linden Houseboats are available to Second Life Premium members, who can choose one via the Land Selection Page on the Second Life website. If you are a Premium Plus member, you can find an empty one that appeals to you and put a ticket in to get it for yourself. Because of their early popularity, houseboats were not always available, but frequent land releases, expansions of new home types and abandonments mean that inventory is a lot bigger now, with 1805 available on the day I wrote this. Residents can abandon and re-select homes as often as they like, allowing them to explore different neighborhoods and styles.
For those who prefer more control or larger builds, traditional land rentals or private estates might be a better fit. But for residents who value style, simplicity, and community in equal measure, Linden Houseboats offer an unparalleled virtual lifestyle.
The Future is Buoyant
As Second Life continues to evolve, the Bellisserian houseboat regions remain a shining example of user-friendly design and immersive living. With their blend of functionality, expanded style and model selection, beauty, and social opportunity, Linden Houseboats prove that you don’t need solid ground to build a dream home — sometimes, the best life begins on the water.
Whether you’re setting sail into a new chapter or just casting anchor in a peaceful harbor, the Linden Houseboats await — a little slice of digital paradise floating just a login away.
