Relay for Life Journal

February 21, 2026

There are evenings in Second Life when the grid hums with a particular kind of electricity—when you can feel, even before the first note drops, that something marvelous is about to happen. Such was the case when I found myself pressed into the crowd for a Dinkies concert at The River Rock Club, performed by “Syndicats” and The SUGAR SKOLS , this time bringing us a thunderous tribute to the heavy metal band Ghost in support of the Relay for Life of Second Life.

Now, anyone who knows me might raise an eyebrow at the thought of me at a heavy metal show—but believe me, EVERYONE was there in full spirit. The stage was ablaze with dramatic lighting, gothic flourishes, and that deliciously theatrical aesthetic that Ghost does so well. The Dinkies captured it all—the driving guitars, the pounding rhythm, the haunting harmonies—while avatars clad in everything from leather and lace to full-on Papa Emeritus regalia danced like the fate of the grid depended on it. There is something wonderfully subversive about a sea of pixels headbanging for charity.

But what moved me most was not merely the music (though it was gloriously loud and impeccably performed), but the purpose behind it. Every Linden donated, every tip jar that chimed, every “Somebody gave me fire!” cheer in local chat was part of something far larger than a concert. It was part of a collective promise—that we, as a community, will continue to stand together in the fight against cancer. Relay for Life in Second Life has always had that magic: it turns music into medicine, dancing into determination, and fandom into fundraising. At the end of that set, this joint fundraiser of the Skols and Hope Floaters showed over $50,000 Lindens were raised, with other sets before and after it.

I was reminded why I love this world so much. Only here can a virtual Highlands occasional hostess find herself at a heavy metal tribute show, surrounded by friends old and new, all united by generosity. The Dinkies didn’t just perform Ghost; they summoned the spirit of community that makes Relay season so extraordinary. And I left that evening with ringing ears, a full heart, and absolute certainty that even in the darkest riffs, there is light.

Tonight the celebration belonged to Team “Rainbows for Hope”, who transformed their corner of the grid into a jubilant Mardi Gras fête in support of the Relay for Life of Second Life. Beneath a canopy of emerald leaves and shimmering strands of jewel-toned lights, the garden glowed with carnival magic—lush, luminous, and alive with purpose.

The air itself seemed to pulse in rhythm with DJ Vyn Alpha, whose electrifying set kept the crowd moving and the lindens flowing. Laughter and lively banter danced between the beats as friends gathered not just to revel, but to rally for a cause that unites us all.

And the costumes—oh, the costumes! Feathers, masks, sequins, and sparkle in every direction, with Angelika’s stunning ensemble reigning as royalty of the evening. It was a night where generosity wore beads and brilliance, and where celebration and compassion twirled hand in hand beneath the Mardi Gras lights.

As the set wound up, over 30k lindens had been dropped into the kiosk for the cause. Well done everyone!! #RelayForLife

PS: I may or may not have pole danced at this event for donation lindens

Tonight I had the pleasure of stepping back in time at the Sock Hop – The Fight for a Cure, and what a fun night it was! From the moment I arrived, Thunder Hallows was alive with the unmistakable energy of the 1950s—penny loafers, saddle shoes, poodle skirts twirling to the glow of neon lights, and the unmistakable hum of a jukebox-era soundtrack setting the tone. Couples spun and laughed, friends formed impromptu circles, and somewhere between the bebop and the boogie, it felt like we’d all slipped into a Technicolor memory.

But beneath the playful nostalgia was something deeper and far more meaningful. This wasn’t just a dance—it was a Relay For Life event, a gathering with purpose. As lindens flowed into the donation kiosk for the American Cancer Society, the joy in the parking lot of Mel’s Drive-In took on an added weight. We weren’t simply crushing dance steps—we were, in our own small way, crushing cancer. There is something profoundly moving about watching a community come together like that: laughter, music, generosity, and hope all intertwined.

By the time it was over I’m sure the shoes may have been metaphorically kicked off and hair was slightly less perfectly coiffed, but spirits were no doubt high and hearts were full. It was one of those Relay nights that reminds you why we show up—not just for the theme or the fun, but for each other. And if ever there was proof that you can dance with purpose, tonight’s Sock Hop delivered it in spades. #SecondLifeRelayForLife

Sunday night proved, once again, that Relay season knows how to make an entrance.

The Sugar Skols #RelayForLife team hosted their “Battle of the DJs,” and what a battle it was. Six powerhouse talents—DJ WyldChld, DJ Mikael the Purple Pirate, DJ Shockwave, DJ Gailybean, DJ Shinobi, and DJ Talya—went head-to-head to see who could rally the most Linden dollars for the cause. The beats were fierce, the playlists on point, and the generosity even stronger.

But this wasn’t just a Skols exclusive event. Team members from across the Relay grid showed up in full force—cheering, dancing, donating, and proving once again that Relay spirit runs deep. By the end of the night, $245,125 Lindens had been raised, and this was matched by our hosts, bringing the grand total to $490,250 Lindens. Even to the very end, the energy in the region was still electric.

Because here’s the truth of it: Relay isn’t really about competition. It’s about collaboration. It’s not 165 separate teams—it’s ONE team, united with a single purpose: to beat cancer.

Relay season is only just beginning—barely a day in—and already this weekend has set the tone in spectacular fashion. If this is how we’re starting, just imagine what’s ahead. Keep an eye on that ACS calendar… every day promises something new, something meaningful, and something worth showing up for.

Today marked the official kickoff of the Relay For Life of Second Life, and what a beginning it was. Although the clock struck 10 AM for the formal start, the celebration had already been underway—friends embracing, teams gathering, laughter rising across the sim as that unmistakable Relay spirit took hold.

Team Captains and their members formed a circle beneath the steady rhythm of drums, waiting to welcome the arrival of the Relay torch. When it came, there was a moment—one of those beautifully collective pauses—where you could feel the purpose behind it all. More than 165 teams stand ready this season. That’s not just a number; it’s a testament to the heart of this community and its commitment to the American Cancer Society’s mission.

After the ceremony, the grid came alive with team-hosted kickoff events. I managed to visit two: The Purple Pumpkins, who brilliantly recreated an immersive Hawkins, Indiana straight out of Stranger Things, and The Fun Zone, where the music was pumping and the energy infectious. Both spaces were filled with creativity, generosity, and that signature Relay joy.

This is only the beginning. I’ll be sharing more photos soon, but in the meantime, be sure to check the ACS Calendar of Events and support the incredible lineup of team activities already underway. Relay season is here—and if today is any indication, it’s going to be extraordinary.
